WHO WE ARE: Established locally in 1911, Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA NCNN) is one of the region's largest providers of social services. Our professional staff operates more than 40 locally managed and delivered programs. Services include food and shelter, counseling, independent living and parenting skills, substance-abuse treatment and rehabilitation, and job training. Currently, VOA NCNN provides shelter or housing to over 3,500 men, women, and children every night.

PROGRAM AND LOCATION: VOA, a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting for a Payroll Accountant position for VOA-NCNN. Full-time employees (working 30 or more hours a week) are eligible for a benefits package that includes paid holidays, vacation, sick pay, health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance coverage.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for payroll processing, general payroll related inquiry management, and other assigned accounting functions as needed. Work is completed in an accurate, detailed, timely, and professional manner in compliance with accounting regulations and department standards. Work is also performed in a cost-effective and service-oriented way as it relates to established organizational standards. Objectives include supportive interaction with program directors, staff, and outside service/product providers.
OBJECTIVES/ACTIVITIES:
1) Payroll Processing
a) Bi-weekly payroll calculation and submittal
b) Deduction Reconciliations and Benefit Allocation
c) Garnishments, accruals (vacation and sick)
d) Payroll Taxes (Federal and State – CA and NV)
e) Manual Payroll Checks
f) Funding payroll requirements and Positive Pay
g) Communicate with supervisors, staff, and administrators regarding payroll items
h) Process housing allowances, mileage, travel and other reimbursements
i) Prepare and submit Workers Compensation report monthly
2) General Ledger
a) Work with Staff Accountants on Payroll Reclassifications
b) Reconciliations of benefit liabilities and payments
3) Reporting and Support
a) Send Payroll Reports to Program Directors
b) Scan and Document retention/Scanning to Server Timely
c) Assist with Monitoring Visits
d) Work with Program Directors on Timecards, Time Off, Accruals, etc.
e) 990 Data Support
f) Back up to Accounts Payable Accountant
g) Monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll taxes and reporting
4) Other
a) Audit Support as Necessary
b) Other Duties as Assigned
EQUIVALENT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting is required. Five years of combined education and accounting/ payroll experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement. Must have knowledge and recent experience with the following: computerized accounting systems, Excel spreadsheets, double-entry accounting, and ADP/Workforce Now HRIS. Must have a willingness to accept responsibility and do repetitive and routine work. Sound judgment, discretion, and tact are required to handle confidential information. Provide services without ethnic or social prejudices. Must have the flexibility to work occasional overtime and be willing to function as a team member. A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet our insurance carrier’s guidelines are required.
